Finding your spine and its position in your body!
What is postural assessment and why should I be concerned?
Postural assessment and analysis is taking the time to look at your body, your canvas or vehicle through which we express ourselves by movement and function. The structure from which we stabilize our motivations and movements.
We recognize the importance of yearly physicals and importance of exercise but seldom do we take the time to look at our bodies, at least in an analytical sense, to see how the joints and muscles function in relation to one another, and in relation to the structure as a whole.
For example, looking to see how our heals are placed on the floor as individual right and left heel of the foot and how each relate to the foot as whole which in turn bears the weight of our body. From there examining the position of the heals can give us information to the two bones, the tibia and the fibula, that rest on the Talus which rests on the calcaneus, our heel, and so on.
Do you get the picture. Yes, it is great to pay attention to our diet and exercise but the fact is that no amount of exercise is going to release our hamstrings if we continue to always keep out pelvis tucked under (a posterior tilt), or enjoy free moving shoulder girdle if we continue to focus on core work with out giving rest or attention to our psoas muscle.
Postural assessment can give us information about our habitual structural patterns and an analysis of how to modify them so that we can walk, play, dance and express ourselves with greater ease, grace and joy.
